Our Sydney horticulture team recently suited up to become one with the wildlife at Taronga Zoo Sydney.
Undertaking an important mission to sort out who’s who at the zoo, the work involved cleaning up the Squirrel Monkeys enclosure for its inhabitants the monkeys and water hens.
The hens nesting area had become so overgrown they had infiltrated the squirrel monkey’s island, kicking them out and taking their food, generally being pesky flatmates.
Marsupial were called in to remove the overgrowth of plants and reeds around hens home. The initial few days were spent cutting back the vegetation on the water’s edge before suiting up in waders to prune the nesting area in the water.
Working in the cold water, the team pruned back the reeds to 200mm – the perfect length before they shoot in the springtime – carrying each lot of cuttings over to the water’s edge to ensure debris didn’t float over to the monkey’s island. They worked discreetly and quietly to avoid frightening the animals.
The team thoroughly enjoyed the experience of being amongst the animals and providing them with a safe and secure home.
